The Mattakeeset Environmental Protections Department was formed due to the administrative policy of the Mattakeeset Tribes original Indian title affirmed in 1664 as restrictive covenant lands set aside for the Mattakeeset Massachuset Tribe. MEP’s number one priority is to protect the lands, air and water resources long reserved in perpetuity for the Mattakeeset Massachuset Tribe.
Water Division
The Water Division focuses on protecting water resources for the Mattakeeset Massachuset Indian Tribe through monitoring, research and permitting. Programs in this division include Water Quality, Tribal WQ Permitting, and Hydrology
Community & Ecosystems Division
The Community and Ecosystems Division focuses on the interactions between environmental conditions and community health. Programs in this division include: Wetlands, Air Quality, Pesticides, Environmental Health, Climate Change, Brownfields and Environmental Research
Pollution Prevention Division
The Pollution Prevention Division focuses on protecting Mattakeeset Massachuset tribal land territories, natural resources and lands through the integrated prevention and remediation of solid and hazardous waste. Programs in this division include the Waste Management, Recycling, Source Water Assessment and Protection, Hazardous Materials Response, Environmental Complaints Investigation.
